INTIMATE LANDSCAPES
These images of tree bark are from the collection of the Arnold Arboretum of Boston and are on display in its gallery through February, 2025. Objects gain in importance as they are separated from their surroundings and brought close in. It gives them an opportunity to speak without the surrounding clamor. I work to capture rich textures, colors, and shapes, details that might otherwise be lost. My intention is to draw attention to the subtle textures and colors I find in the raw photographic file. Some of these tell enigmatic stories; some are suggestive of landscapes or people; some are abstractions based on tiny sections of bark. Looking closely reveals worlds initially obscure, worlds that come out to play the longer we look. Read the full artist statement here.
