Light and dark

Marc GoldringComment

The play of light and dark is so interesting to me, I guess that’s one of the basic parts of photography. It’s particularly interesting to me on cloudy days because there the distinctions are considerably more subtle. The recent foggy days have been a great opportunity to explore what is possible when the sun is covered over.

What I notice is that familiar scenes become unfamiliar. This shot is a place I walk by every time I walk around the Pond, sometimes twice. Yet the resonance here is completely different from other times. More mysterious, or that’s how it seems to me. Not foreboding but I could understand if you had that reaction.

This may not be a big deal to you. But for me, especially during this time when it’s much harder to get to less familiar places, it’s a delight to have the familiar made new.
