Surrounded

Toward the end of a walk that started on the Conifer Path and led onward I’m not exactly sure where, I found a yew tree that grew many trunks in an almost circle. It was a bit off the path and when I walked closer I noticed a woman at an easel capturing the tree. I said hello from a distance so as not to startle her and then walked slowly closer, trying not to be a distraction.

From close up, I could look inside the ring of trunks of this almost 100-year-old yew. It felt like a tiny sanctuary, a place of refuge, having grown over time, with purpose or not. Because there was another set of eyes taking in the scene, I found myself looking more intently, me with my camera, she with her colors.

It was a quiet moment and I left quickly, rather than intrude on another artist’s moment. If I can find that tree again, it would be well to spend more time with it.
