Color!

Color!

It’s winter of course and I suppose I ought not be surprised that the world is less colorful than it is at other times of year. This year the lack of color is harder for me to approach, in large part because of the upheaval in our country, the implicit violence and mean-spiritedness. Seems like the only color allowed is white.

So when I was visiting a friend and saw his bouquet of old flowers, it struck a chord for me. I’ve always been attracted to the beauty of decaying things, of faded beauty. It says something about resilience beyond this particular moment.

When I saw these flowers, their color, while faded was sufficient to startle me into a warmer, more colorful place. And I’d like to hope that the same will be true with what we are seeing in our country - that we will, with difficulty I am sure, reach a place of warmth and balance in our civic life. I hope I live long enough to see it!
