Ice

Marc GoldringComment

It’s been cold lately and so the Pond has varying degrees of ice covering it. The ducks and geese - swans, too - seem to have acclimated to it, although it seems like every day a different area of the surface is iced over. Some days back when the wind gusted for hours on end, the Pond seemed to have waves. And as those waves touched the shore in those well-below-freezing temperatures, the water froze to rocks and branches, no matter how small.

It was a wonderland, a subtle and complex array of forms looking like fantastic translucent plants and imaginary animals made of glass. Walking around the Pond, I saw natural forces of wind and water combine in frigid weather to make sculptural forms similar to what an artist might envision.

And for me, with my camera to record this, it felt too easy, like I was recording someone else’s art work. Now that I think of it, that’s fine. Whomever we credit as the artist, the work is worth looking at!
