Tenacity

Trees grow slowly, no question, especially compared to humans and their inventions. Here we see the remains of a particularly tenacious tree that managed to grow through a chain-link fence. For all the good it did!

When I come upon a story that speaks to the interaction between the natural world and the human one, it’s often about mastery, winning and losing. Clearly in this instance, the tree lost. We, of course, lost the benefit of that tree, to the extent that people thought about it. Probably it was just in the way. We humans do tend to think that way…

I do try to find hope when I look around. What is there hopeful here? Only that the tree lived for some time and was perhaps able to spawn saplings that continue to grow. That’s the best I can do!
