Two-dimensional trees?

Marc GoldringComment

I recently did a series of close-up shots of fungi and lichen on the decaying concrete embankment supporting the Ashmont to Mattapan trolley. I called it “Imaginary Landscapes” because if I squinted just right, I could see mountains and valleys sometimes. (You can see this series on my website.) Many of those images were shot within weeks of one another and pretty much all in the same place. That’s uncommon for me.

Yesterday I was walking passed the Old Burying Ground Cemetery in Brookline. I was struck by some impressive growths of moss on the granite walls that lined it. Maybe because they were growing on the walls, they reminded me of the Mattapan shots.

But unlke the ones in the Mattapan portfolio, these don’t feel like illusions, although I haven't yet found a word to describe them.. I know they’re fun to look at, like two-dimensional bonsai.

I had assumed that the Mattapan series was a one-off but now I’m not so sure. I’ll keep looking and see what turns up!
