I’ve been shooting cross-sections of logs for at least 15 years, maybe longer. There’s something about the architecture of decay that captures my attention. They are abstractions of the natural process of decline, a subject that occupies me more as I get older.

What attracted me about this log was that it was hard to sort out what was going on before the tree was felled and what was happening in its later years. OK, that’s what attracted me after I noticed it - the intellectual component of the looking often comes later. The initial attraction was simply the mix of colors and textures, no real surprise there.

This image feels to me a bit like a celebration of the life of this tree, the later stages of that life for sure but a portrait of its decline. I hope that my decline, if and when, allows for as much color and texture as this old tree!
