Stumble
Looking down while you’re walking in the woods makes more sense than it otherwise might. There’s more risk of stumbling on roots and other debris even if you miss the glory in the treetops. Another advantage is what you might notice looking where we sometimes don’t.
This complex of roots is a symphony of color and texture and shape. I’m not at all clear why it has grown this way but I surely appreciate that it has. Honestly, I’m not even clear that it’s a single tree’s root system – maybe the different colors and textures are actually roots from different trees.
All of my speculation shouldn’t detract from the enjoyment of finding this small composition at my feet as I avoid woodland stumbles.
