Twisted

I haven’t been shooting as much as in the past and this image is from the end of November, before this cold spell, before what passes for snowfalls. It seems to represent the beginning of a new direction, now that my commitment to capture close-ups of bark from trees in the Arb has been completed .*

Now that the leaves are off the trees, we can see the structure they hid. Why do the branches grow as they do? These limbs grow slowly and yet their twists and turns seem intentional, if not impulsive. But how can you be impulsive over the course of the seasons it takes to grow limbs this thick? It says something about how we humans view time. Another way in which a familiar concept shifts as we see it in a different context.

* I’m hosting a reception for my exhibition in the Hunnewell Building next Saturday, December 7 from 1-3PM. Drop by if you’re around - it’s a good excuse to walk in the Arb! I’ll have the few remaining 2025 calendars if you’re interested, and a free gift!
