Roots, leaves, ice

Marc GoldringComment

Walking around the Pond at this time of year, certainly the ice is likely; also, I suppose, the leaves, dry and crumpled. And if there are trees near the water, likely there will be roots. All of this is a way of saying that these elements being present in this image is not really a surprise.

There’s something about this assemblage that reminds me of winter. The leaves have lost the heavy highlight of autumn and seemed resigned to decomposition. The roots are there, not going anywhere and hard to know whether they still furnish nutrients to the tree. And the ice, to my eye, only the ice dances, only the ice is pleased with the weather, smiling into this scene, top to bottom.

And as the days begin a tentative walk toward thaw, we can enjoy the dance, too!
