A Different Water's Edge

This time we were at the edge of the Charles River in West Roxbury. I wasn’t expecting any interesting shots because the place looked so new and filled with parking lots. But it was easy to leave that behind and walk toward the water. When I came upon this tree, my perspective shifted.

This tree has been living in this spot for a good long while. And it seems to have hung on in the face of rising and falling waters. The tumble of roots seems to provide some testimony to that. And the large limbs that reach out into the water make me wonder where the shoreline was, say, twenty years ago.

So this haphazard tree, surviving in this place by dint of being rooted here, however unsuitable for sustained growth, this tree twists and turns its way to get the sunlight and nutrients it needs.

I’m not sure but I’m exploring a new series of images that this image sparked in me. I’ll post them over the next few entries and I’d love to hear your thoughts on them.
