I was walking toward the Bussey Street Gate when I noticed this elegant juxtaposition of trees. It was shape and color and texture combining to create a simple, lovely visual moment. These trees were clearly not around 150 years ago when Olmsted was doing his design work. Yet his sensibility is reflected here, intentionally or not.

Perhaps it was just the angle at which I approached this scene; or the quality of the light; or the time of year that put deciduous and conifer in relief. Whatever it was, it was a delight to notice. I don’t always, so when it happens, I treasure it. That’s the beauty of paying attention – all sorts of things that seem small can align to make a big difference.
