Inside baseball

I don’t usually write about my process of shooting or processing images. It was such a surprise to me, a surprise and delight, that I will this time. Indulge me!.

I was walking around with the camera, first around Leverett Pond then Wards Pond and finally crossing Perkins to the Pinebank Promontory. (That name always feels a tad pompous to me, but I guess the field where there used to be a big old mansion deserves a special name.) Nothing much was coming for me - I shot but nothing captured my attention for more than a moment.

I stopped to visit the two glorious sycamore trees on the Pinebank and noticed an interesting limb. There was peeling bark and drips that I couldn’t identify. It was a limb rather than the trunk, so I struggled to get a shot with only the limb. I knew I had something but I wasn’t sure what. So I went to the studio to see…

Usually I post-process promising images 2 or 3 different ways to see what’s most to my liking. Not this one! I made some initial decisions and went ahead and this just jumped out at me: colorful, mysterious, textured, everything I love in an image.

As you can probably tell, I love it. Then again, I like all the new ones. We’ll see if this one stays one of my darlings…
